“Nu-uh.”

At Harley’s heroic effort, Paul hid a smile. There weren’t many people who could watch themselves get sewn up like a button and keep their composure.

Unfortunately, his assistant didn’t sound nearly as together as his patient.

“Hang tight, both of you. I’ll be done in a few minutes.”

Eight stitches later, the trio breathed a collective sigh of relief. “Harley, do you remember the date of your last tetanus shot?”

“Tet’nus what?”

“Ooo-kay. I want you to come to my office after I’m through here.” He smiled at Millie. “You can call Chief Gibson and tell him we won’t be needing his squad car.”

The woman wiped a hand over her sweat-beaded brow. “Is his thumb gonna be okay?”

“I think so.” He wrapped Harley’s wound with gauze and taped over it. “Think you could find a disposal for the trash while I finish?”

Paul added a set of tongue depressors to the bandage, taped them to the thumb, and wrapped the hand until it resembled a mitten. After packing his bag, he stood, as did Harley. Millie rushed in carrying a drawstring garbage bag, and he deposited the remnants of the mini-surgery.

At the sight of the bloody towels, Harley swayed on his feet. Paul caught him and helped him back in the chair. “Take it easy while I talk to your boss.”

He and the grocer walked to the door that led into the S&B. “Does Harley have workman’s comp or health insurance?”
